I’ve spoken about Bon Scott’s death before and am re-working another Back In Black piece from year’s prior, but I can’t ignore the 30th anniversary of Bon’s passing without saying something.
Has it been that long?
My cousin and I are fixated on his passing and with the subsequent album Back In Black. More recently-on the completely unreliable Blabbermouth comment section-several people alluded to the fact that UFO knew about some of the foul play involved with Bon’s passing.
To bring you up to speed, the official story went like this:
Bon Scott had spent the first few weeks of February, 1980, writing songs for the next AC/DC album On February 19, he went to AC/DC’s tour manager Ian Jeffrey’s house for dinner and left around 6:30pm. He was to meet UFO’s Phil Mogg and Pete Way at the Music Machine, a venue in London. They never arrived. Bon continued drinking-reportedly consuming at least seven double whiskeys at the bar until it closed around 3:00 am on the morning of the 20th. A long-time friend, Alistar Kinnear, was with Scott at the time and offered to drive him home.
When they reached Scott’s apartment, Bon had passed out and Kinnear was unable to move him. Kinnear proceeded on to his own home where he went inside to retrieve a blanket. He went back out to the car, reclined the seat (bad move) covered up his still passed-out friend and retired into his home. He put a note on the blanket with his address and phone number, in case Scott woke up disoriented in these unusual surroundings.
Fifteen hours later, he left his flat and saw Scott still in the car and totally unresponsive. Kinnear freaked and drove the body to King’s College Hospital where they determined that Scott had inhaled some of his own vomit while passed out in the car.
And we all know you can’t really dust for vomit.
Much has been raised about the nature of his death-it was a very cold night in London and others (including Ozzy Osbourne) have speculated that he passed from hypothermia. Others questioned why Kinnear chose to leave Bon outside in the cold and even a few suggested foul play. It didn’t help that the local press misspelled Kinnear’s name, fueling conspiracy theories and suggesting that Scott didn’t really die at all.
Bon Scott doesn’t seem like someone who would go to any lengths to construct his own disappearance. As a man rooted in blue collar upbringing, he was doing what he loved best with AC/DC and all of his/their hard work was starting to pay off at the time of his passing.
And to blame Kinnear for his death is unnecessary. I’m sure the man was plagued with guilt the moment he saw Scott’s cold body still in his car. Scott was an adult with a drinking problem, and to think that someone was supposed to babysit him after he chose to overindulge is not fair. I look back on my own life and I recall more than one occasion where someone was left in their car to sleep it off, based entirely on the fact that lifting a grown man up some stairs while trying to get them into a residence just wasn’t about to happen.
One Blabbermouth commenter suggested “They (UFO) have a good idea what happened but refuse to talk about it.” Another commenter suggests that UFO were also around The Pretenders’ James Honeyman-Scott on the night that he passed.
Weird. Any insight to either of these would be appreciated.
But the real story for my cousin and I is what happened after Scott died. There were reports that members of Albert Productions-AC/DC production company-later visited Scott’s flat and exited with some personal belongings, namely a notepad with lyrics and song ideas. The only proof to this is how quickly the band developed Back In Black after Bon died, with a new singer who has gone on record to suggest that songwriting is not his strongest suit and that he has a particularly difficult time composing material with his new bandmates for Back In Black.
When you look at the songwriting credits after Back In Black, you’ll notice that Brian Johnston’s name suddenly evaporates, and on the tracks that he does receive compositional credits on, they’re worthless. No where near the level of Bon’s material and not even close to the songs that appeared on Back In Black.
It’s been suggested that Back In Black was, for the most part, completed and ready to record when Bon died. After all, Scott was using his time in London to finish up some songwriting duties.
There’s also speculation that there is demo material which contains songs from Back In Black featuring Bon Scott on lead vocals. The Young brothers deny this and have yet to produce any recorded evidence of it, and why should they? Back In Black is one of the world’s most successful albums and to admit that most of it was created with Bon still in the band would mean they’d have to correct the songwriting credits and provide the estate of Bon Scott with a huge windfall of royalty checks.
I’m not suggesting foul play, but Back In Black does sound like the work of a new band following the same pattern as their former frontman. And after a few albums in with Brian at the helm, they sound like a completely different band (lyrically) again, admittedly not one with the same level of lyrics that they’d managed before. Of course, some suggest that the band continued lifting from Scott’s notebook all the way to Flick Of The Switch before completely running out of material, forcing them to come up with things on their own.
And what did they come up with? “Sink The Pink.”
Nothing would change if the truth did come out or if these accusations were systematically dismantled by the band (Maybe they have been; provide links in the comment section if you know), but I’d sure like to hear how these songs sounded with Bon up front, even in their skeletal form. It’s selfish, I know, but it’s also selfish to keep Scott out of the picture of one of the most successful albums of all times if he indeed had a hand in creating it.
Adding to the drama? Alister Kinnear went missing at sea over three years ago and was just recently listed as officially declared dead.

Yikes, 30 years, again I feel old. As a late comer to being a fan, I had the luxury of getting familiar with the Scott after hearing lots of the Johnson stuff first. Other than Back in Black, I listen to anything with Johnson more for the Young brothers guitar work and the super solid rhythm section and ignore the silly lyrics (Thunderstruck is a good example). I also enjoy the Scott era for the whole package. I wasn't aware of the conspiracy theories.
look at the junk on that man.
good lord.
Here we go...I absolutely love to talk Bon Scott. Many of you who write anything know that the more you write, the better you get at writing & this is how you develop your own unique writing style.
An in-depth analysis of AC/DC lyrics (laughing to/at myself as I typed that) shows that there was a level of humor, sophistication and word play that clearly disappeared during/after 'Flick of the Switch'.
Additionally, this same analysis indicates that the same types of intricate rhymes and couplets that can be found in AC/DC lyrics before Bon Scotts death can also be found after his death but ONLY up to this same point in time. After that, AC/DC lyrics, (using another Spinal Tap reference here), tread water in a sea of retarded sexuality.
So, did Bon's notebook full of lyrics 'disappear' into the hands of the Young brothers? Obviously we'll never know, because if they were smart, all evidence (including demos) would probably have been destroyed. I mean, like Todd said, we're probably looking at tens of millions of dollars (if not more) in royalties that would be owed to Scott's estate.
On a related side note, found a funny comment on Blabbermouth regarding Alistair Kinnear's disappearance at sea: Maybe he left the boat to steer itself, thinking it would be fine in the morning.
And indeed, that is one hell of a bulge. Now I know what Tanja mean by the "whole package."
I favor the Scott era as a whole but love the 3 albums after his death as well. I just wouldn't want to see him with AC/DC now, as an old man, hunched over, going through the motions up on stage so the Young brothers can keep cashing in. Just like I wouldn't want to see Cliff Burton embarassing himself with Metallica...
If I recall, the only songs that Johnson really wrote was "Back In Black" and "Givin The Dog A Bone" and both aren't the greatest lyrical example by any means. His name may be on the credits, but it was the Young brothers who found themselves having to come up with the rest of that material in BinB. Some of the music may have been worked out when Bon was alive, but they came up with it. Listen closely and even the best songs on that album aren't up to Bon's songs. And it was a bit of a cheap shot to include "Have A Drink On Me" given the circumstances.
Interesting theory tho...
brian johnson isnt credited for a single track on the `black ice` album(which is their worst album to date by the way!) what year did bon get his teeth fixed?.......just wondered...
Madman
I've always thought that was the case with back in black.
only 74 jailbreak has come out credited to Bon. i've only really liked up to back in black.
Bang out of order
proffI agree with the comments above. If you think back, The Album "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" was recorded in 1976, but was released in the U.S in 1981 after "Back in Black". Having the original release here, I wanted to see if any songwriting credits were given to Bon Scott. Here is what I found on the album inside cover sleeve:

No where on the album do they mention writing credits, or members of the band.
I can't recall a single album that I have ever looked at, that did not give lyric and/or music credit somewhere on the album. Also band member and instrument/vocal credit is usually on the album as well.
I checked out "Let There Be Rock", and guess what I found: ON THE BACK OF THE ALBUM BELOW THE SONG NAMES, THIS IS WHAT I FOUND:
All compositions by: Young, Young, & Scott.
All compositions published by: E.B. Marks Music Corp., BMI.
Then the band members names and instruments.

I do not understand why this would change from one album to the next, unless someone is being a little underhanded. What do you guys think? If anyone knows why this is, please comment back. Thank you.
I was never a huge AC DC fan but I find this issue about the Back in Black album very curious.
Which albums exactly contain Scott's lyrics?
I would like to compare them to what came later, including the BIB album.
Just an update, there's a great article in a recent Mojo that talks about the time immediately following Scott's death and up to the recording of Back In Black. It essentially acknowledges that Brian is not that good of a songwriter and he admits to penning "Back In Black." I gave the copy to my cousin to read, but he remains convinced that there is more to the story. The Mojo piece got me considering the possibility that Back In Black is just a rush of spontaneity, a bit of residual creativity from the presence of a new guy, and a little bit of luck.
here is what i have heard through a good friend in the music biz , who has had a couple major label releases & knows everyone from back in the day. i`ll keep it short. everyone knows pete way used to do a lot of heroin. i heard pete shot up bon , bon`s first time & bon scott OD. they freaked out & put him in the back of the car. atlantic & co. help cover all this up & the reports only stated that he died of alcohol poisoning. dunno if its true , but that what i know ..
I always thought that the Young brothers wrote the music and when they where done, they brought the tapes to Bon and he put the words to them. I could have sworn i saw them say this in one of there documentary's. It's very possible that Bon had already wrote the lyrics to most of the tracks on Back in Black. Hells Bells and Back in Black are dead on Bon Scott style songs.I don't think the Young brothers would ever have enough talent to write such lyrics. To this day nothing comes close to the songs that have come from the early era of ACDC. The Young brothers avoid these questions like the plauge each time there brought up. After Back in Black, it was a steady downfall from grace with the overall product. Except for Dirty Deeds, but we all know that was more of Bons magic that had already been done, just not released here yet. Shame on you Young brothers if this is the real case.
Interesting idea, that UFO was with James Honeyman Scott the night he died. I'd never heard that before. I looked for the connection in the comments section that you mentioned, but couldn't find it. Do you have a link for that particular connection?
Not sure about all this conspiracy stuff but I do know the majority of BIB was recorded with Bon on vocals down in the Bahamas & was being remixed at the time of his death, Bon was a close personal friend of mine....RIP brother!
The young brothers. Took more than one book of notes. They took a dead man words and mixed there. Words and music and shit the Scott family out of millions. Of dollars and took a mans words. And made millions. Off a dead man. But now as u can tell. Years ago they used. All of bons notes up.
Back in black has Bon's finger prints all over it. Just study the lyrics and compare them with the earlier and later albums. Dog a bone, Money honey, shoot to thrill, you shook me, have a drink and noise pollution all Bon's lyrics IMHO.
People have said, Back in Black was a tribute, hence the title. Another theory is that it's Back in the Black. Bon wrote about finally hitting the big time and making it. Food for thought, guess we'll never know :(
I could be wrong, but I personally don't see the Young brothers taking the ultimate piss on Bon's grave and stealing his song lyrics to write Back In Black without crediting him-everyone here has assumed that if some guys working for Albert's DID break into Bon's flat after his death and stole the song lyrics he had been working on, that the lyrics were then used by ACDC. Whose to say they weren't given/sold to some other act on the Albert's roster? I don't see the Young brothers robbing a dead man who was as close as family to them.
This is a bunch of BS.Leave AC/DC alone.Any fan who takes to this is a faggot.
"Forget about the check we'll get hell to pay!" To me that is a perfect example of Bon's lyrics. Money makes people do bad things. Shame on the Youngs.
the same thing happened when the song "can sit next to you girl?" was put on the its a long way to the top album -- bon scott rewrote a couple of the words and dave evans the first singer never got the credit for writing that song..
Ok...on my dad's death...he did not die in london...he died in mordialloc a town in Melbourne Australia. ..I know this because I skipped school to visit him and found him deceased...With obvious injuries...
As for writing back in black...well I witnessed him tell people he was retired...the bands management had insisted on replacing my dad because of his criminal record preventing visas for some countries...even when mark evans was in the band it was known that a new singer was being searched for....
So its impossible for my dad to have written back in black...undoubtedly some single verse lines have appeared in many albums since his death...but 1 line in a song does not constitute song credit. ...
As for his unit being broken into...yes this happened. ...but he purchased his unit in stkilda Melbourne Australia. ..not London. ...and due to the manner in which he was found...and that how his death was caused by violence. ..I can not be sure who was responsible. ...
Not for a minute do I think the youngs stole anything from my dad...he loved them to bits...and he knew that their loyalty to him inspite the label managers.... gave him a house a job and a full belly....I assure you all the young boys were not involved. ...
Vince love Grove told people my dad was sad and broke. ..this is a blatant lie...my dad visited me with the likes of ozzy Osborne and gene Simmons. ..my dad put 10 thousand into my bank aged 7... that was a huge amount in 1980... he bought me an electric ride on kids car... I witnessed his financial condition...and he was truly cashed up...
The main reason people like vince and mary have fabricated stories...is that unit my dad bought in stkilda.... we suspect that they have missappriated belongings of my dad...like the silver devils horns...and jewelry that some now claim my dad give them....
And now I give you a clear discrepancy in the album sales calculations....its said back in black is second in sales...behind thriller. ..ok no problem there...(except some perhaps strange subliminals in the word used...thriller)...
Highway to hell was my dads last album...and since his death...he has risen to arguably the most famous hard rock singer to date...highway was released well before cds came into production... meaning that most fans have purchased highway multiple times...once in vinyl...then again on cd....
So how many acdc fans do you know who have not bought highway to hell...??? Or how many have purchased back in black...and not bothered to buy highway to hell..???
So how could the total album sales between back in black and highway to hell be so far apart. .....???? I agree some will have puchased only back in black. ...but no way has the majority of fans not purchased highway to hell. .......???
So you guys are both right and wrong...your correct that someone has fiddled my dad's albums sale total....as highway should not be far behind back in black....
but your wrong to say my dad wrote the back in black album....because he was no longer in the band....:).....ben
The same label that released those albums without credits. ..are the same who insisted on my dad being replaced. ..it would be pointless to have him removed from the band only to then release albums including his name. ...
You got me ringing hells bells...
It was by choice of the youngs...it was the bands management. ...
Oops...if you been able to watch things since 1980 regarding my dad and me....???
You would know the reason I was never given the money that my dad told me I would get...why..???
Have you ever watched one of those horrid horror films whete eventually someone gets murdered. ..???
Bit like watching a THRILLER....
Oh and guys...when my dads house got robbed...they were not after his book of rock. ..
they were after his diary....but they couldn't find it.........:) ..........
.
Bon Scott was an improver,he improved other peoples songs , as well as his own( you shook me from Led Zeppelin)and turned them into greater songs --that`s not something that Brian Johnson was ever to pull off so far
Wen he got the dough thats wen
Ben Scott fuck off you aren't Bons son!! Back to business, I have no doubt they stole Bons lyrics to further their careers. Brian never wrote lyrics before joining the band, and we are expected to believe that within weeks of joining the band he penned the perfect lyrics to one of the top 5 albums of all time? Then within a few years he's removed from the songwriting of the band because he's run out of song ideas?? He couldn't write a song to save his life...I'd like to know where he got the life experience touring the world to write the songs on BIB? Pretty impressive for a guy who was doing vinyl tops on cars and had never left the UK. They ran out of Bons material after Flick in my opinion. Another interesting point is the song Bedlam In Belgium , a song about a riot at a gig when Bon was still alive, yet BJ is credited with writing the lyrics about an actual event that he was never involved with???? I don't know how dumb the Youngs think their older fans are but I am not fooled by their bullshit. You can't trust what they say about Bon or BIB, they have contradicted themselves so many times over the years nothing they said should ever be considered as anything even remotely close to the truth....RIP Bon!!
The Bon Scott ACDC is the greatest pure R&R band of all time imho, but the songs on BIB just feel like Bon songs, atleast some of them. Shook me all night long just screams Bon to me, I'm sure they fiddled around with new songs on the road. We will never know for sure, maybe when we die. If I go to Hell, I'll look Bon up and ask him.
bon scott wrote lot of words he was the back nine for the bib album
come on its common sense bon wrote a lot of words for the next album bib if u pay close attention the young brothers said they were ready for bon to put his words to there music bon was not in vacation he had wrote lots of lyrics for the next album when he die its well know his flat was visited and stuff was taken his notes words like the song say its a dog eat dog bib was bon words the band took a dead man words and made millons. come on people its common sense untill those lyric ran out we all know Johnson could not rewrite Mary had a little lamb as far as Ben scott let's c u take a blood test cause bon had two nephews let's c your blood match
Ben Scott is nothing but a fake and phony. To pretend to be Bon Scott's son for whatever reasons is sick and cruel. Obviously there's something mentally wrong with this dude. I agree take a blood test and compare it to one of Bon's living relations and see if it's a match?! I know it wouldn't be and put the ridiculous lie to rest once for all. Better yet you can plaster the truth all over the Internet for the whole world to know what most already know. Ben Scott you are a fucking sick liar who's demented in the head. Get yourself fucking help NOW!!!
STFU
The 1974 original recording of "Can I sit next to you, girl?", with Dave Evans singing, is credited to Angus and Malcolm young. The 1975 recording of "Can I sit next to you girl?", with Bon Scott singing, is also credited to Young and Young.
No changes in songwriting credits, and no credit to Evans or Scott, on either recording.
The songwriting credits are the same before and after "Bon Scott rewrote a couple of the words."
Bejamim obrien (goes by scott) You mentioned in your interview at the cemetery, that you changed your name by deed poll, I checked with births, deaths and marriages, and not surprisingly there is no one registered as Ronald Belford Scott as you stated, care to elaborate?
I have seen copies of the Royalty cheques payable to The Estate of Ronald Belford Scott for his 1/3 share of writing royalties from Back in Black. This is a fact pointed out by Vince Lovegrove (deceased) in a 2010 Article, and by Jesse Fink in his 2017 book Bon: The Last Highway. Apparently, the band had all the songs written by Bon, about 95% complete, they wanted to use them, but they didn’t want to give Bon the writing credits on the album, as they thought that they would be accused of ‘making money from a dead guy’. So that had their lawyers do a deal with Bon’s Parents, Isa and Chick so that Bon’s Estate gets the royalties that he is entitled to, without actually having put his name on the album credits.
End of Story!!!
How? When? Are you a family friend?
I have a cd called "The Interview" Brian says "Half the songs were half finished "
FTATR was Bon's last song
The great lyrics that Helped make AC/DC was gone forever after that .
The Album FTATR is full of the last song Ideas of Bon Scott .
Scott mentioned this "Big ole stack of song ideas on the dvd "Unplugged"
Note:I notice No one is talking about the "great" lyrics of the band "Jordie"
Just saying
Brian Johnson has not been on the song credits since 1988
Brian Johnson has not been on the song credits since 1988
When they say "all songs written by Young Young and Scott" it means all guitar parts of the songs (the riffs) were written by Young and Young ,The Lyrics were written by Scott
Listen to Every thing up to the song For Those About to Rock (Bon),then listen to after (Young Young and Johnson)
The song Back in Black was written by a hired song writer outside the band , The album Back in Black Originally was going to be "HELLS BELLS"
You are correct Bon wrote lyrics all the time as the young brothers wrote guitar music all the time
When they went inside the recording studio they as a group decided which of Bons lyrics went best with the riffs of the young brothers ,That was AC/DC
On MTVs "ultimate albums" however they said Bon showed up with zero lyrics for all the BIB riffs the young brothers had written .
They also went on to say Bon actually listened to the riffs of the BIB album then went off got drunk and died .
Well your "close personal friend"was dead in East Dulwich London before AC/DC went to the Bahamas with Brian Johnson
They Did it with an agreement with Bon"s family, mainly his Mom and Dad
"LEAVE BRITNEY (oops i mean Brian) ALONE!!! WHAAAA WHAAA
Angus and Malcolm Young are the sole song writer's of "Can I sit next to you girl"
Somebody's been smoking some good shit lol
Bon was known to stuff his pants as a joke
This is clearly one of those times lol
I agree with you
They also thought they were dead in the water without thier lyricist
They thought if the fans believed Brian wrote BIB they would accept him ,they even told fans Bon saw Brian at a "Battle of the Bands" concert and Bon loved him .
They had Brian tote around a bottle of Jack Daniels and act like a drinking partier
Just like Bon .
They had no idea that BIB was going to be a top album of all time .
You could say they got "Millie Vanillied" the bigger the album got the worst the lies got .
When actually they were just trying to survive
Its rumored that the usa had refused visa entry to 1 or more band members and the usa had refused to pay a dime to the band despite albums being sold in America and that a deal was done where the usa were able to remove the song credits for the bands members...
I remember seeing malcolm say that he talked to the usa label and said if my brother can't go...either will I...
The exact details of the agreement im not privvy to...but the story im telling has truth to it...
Kool you are wrong... my dad worked with ac/dc for many years making songs...not all the songs previously worked were put in the albums my dad was the singer in...
So its no surprise that the youngs went back to songs that hadn't already been released and reworked them with brian that appeared in back in black...
Unknown...... i was not registered with the Australian government until I were in high school...they forced my mum to go to court and explain why i had not been given an official name earlier...
Up until 77 everyone called me bon...some true friends of my dad still call me bon...
In 77 my dad came to me and said that my mum had complained that she didn't want me being called bon anymore...
This was when my dad had started to support bands connected with the southern usa rock bands like lynard skynard...
And this was treated by many Australians including my mum as a betrayal...
I think the best proof that my dad was not in ac/dc at the time of his death is the zero photos of the mourning band members attending the funeral...
Phil rudd once said that he felt ashamed that the band didn't go to the funeral...
Picture yourself in a band...you've just supported the world's biggest rock bands like kiss ect ect...
Then bam your singer dies....
What are the headlines going to say ?
Are you going to the funeral ?
Ben you are so right. Your father was a true lyrical genius. And yes shame to the rest of the band for not going to the funeral that kinda seems shady to me
So, let's see. "Bon's dead, so let's take All his work and put it in the shredder and let's get this new guy from this unknown band write ALL of the lyrics to the album that is going to make or break us."
WOW think about that for a minute
