Neil Young & Crazy Horse Cancel Upcoming Tour Dates

Poncho Sampedro needs some additional time to let his hand injury heal properly, according to an announcement from Neil Young & Crazy Horse released this week.

These old farts have been touring all the way since last year when Psychedelic Pill was released. And when I say "old farts" I mean it. Particularly since Poncho is the youngest member and that fucker's almost 65!

After the announcement, there's video footage of a song from the tour recorded prior to Poncho's owie.

"Neil Young & Crazy Horse regretfully announce that in addition to canceling the remaining dates on their European tour, they must also cancel their upcoming U.S. tour dates due to a hand injury sustained by guitarist Poncho Sampredo, whose doctor has indicated that Sampredo's hand requires additional time to heal properly.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes to our fans or the Festivals where we were scheduled to appear," the band has said in a statement. "As you must be, we too are disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events."

Neil Young & Crazy Horse Announce New Long-winded Triple Album

Neil Young has been trying your patience in him for well over a decade now, and with the latest album he's done with Crazy Horse, he appears to be trying your attention as well.

Check out the song lengths for Psychedelic Pill, in what's sure to be another major disappointment from an artist that is beginning to make me think that maybe David Geffen had it right all along when he sued him in the early 80's.

September 11, 2012 - (Burbank, CA) - On the heels of their well-received summer release Americana, NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE have announced that they will release another album, entitled Psychedelic Pill, on October 30th. Produced by Neil Young with John Hanlon and Mark Humphreys, Psychedelic Pill was recorded right after Americana at Audio Casablanca and features eight tracks, plus a bonus track. The double-CD is available for pre-order here. The triple-vinyl, which will be available on Nov. 23, is also available for pre-order here . 

Due to the lengths of many of the songs, some of which were previewed during Crazy Horse's live performances in August, Psychedelic Pill will be released as a double-CD and as a triple-LP vinyl edition. In the spirit of Americana's release, full-length videos for each of the songs will be available for viewing and purchase. A recommended high-resolution 24/192 full-fidelity version of Psychedelic Pill will be released on Blu-ray and will include all the videos. Crazy Horse, which is Young, Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, and Poncho Sampredo, will hit the road for a North American tour beginning October 1st and continuing on for two months. The tour will visit cities from coast to coast, including stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York City. In addition, Young's annual Bridge School benefit will take place on October 20th and 21st at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. This year's line-up includes performances by Neil Young & Crazy Horse and label mates The Flaming Lips and Gary Clark Jr., as well as Jack White, Guns N' Roses and more.

Neil Young "Pants On The Ground"

Jimmy Fallon worked his great Neil Young impersonation last night for a cover of General Larry Platt's American Idol viral hit "Pants On The Ground." In case you haven't seen it, I'll leave it to you to seek it out. It's essentially a sixty-two year old dude making fun of teenagers walking around in baggy pants. I had no idea they were still in style, but evidently the old fart had something to say about the youth's fashion faux-pas.

Here was my train of thought one week in 1991. I was still on the high that was Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Ragged Glory and I caught wind that Uncle Neil was getting ready to release a live album of the Ragged Glory tour. And I heard that the album would feature an initial limited edition offering called Arc Weld, a three-disc box set that contained the proper live release and a third disc featuring nothing but Neil’s guitar feedback. For some reason, I thought “Hey, that sounds awesome!” and put my name on the list for that first-come/first-serve 25,000 copy release.
I’ve listened to the feedback disc Arc probably two or three times since then.
It’s the equivalent of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music or so I’ve been told. And after hearing Arc two or three times, I have no interest in hearing Metal Machine Music.
As far as the real musical selection of this release, Weld features Neil and the Horse at their most raucous. There’s plenty of feedback, plenty of grit, and plenty of repetitiveness. I remember going into this release looking forward to the Arc section because so much of Weld had been done before on other releases. The moment I realized that Arc was a piece of shit, I was forced to tangle with Weld.
It may be the most guitar-oriented release of Young’s career and most of the songs feature endless soloing and shenanigans. I still prefer Live Rust to it, but it was hard for me to believe at the time that a man of Neil’s age could return to fuzz in such fashion. But my absolute favorite part of the album comes during “Welfare Mothers” when guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro repeatedly yells “Mom! I’m hungry!” Poncho’s a big dude, so the visual in my head is quite humorous.
Arc Weld was released on this day in 1991. It was the first Neil Young album that didn’t crack the Billboard 100 charts in 22 years. You can get Arc as it’s been re-issued as a single disc offering, but you’d be a fucking retard if you did.
