This thing rocks so much balls that I'm right back in '92, creaming on new Jesus Lizard and Barkmarket discs once again. It reminds me that I need to update last year's Baker's Dozen list, because this fucker is right up in there.

The new video is directed by Chad VanGaalen, whose Diaper Island was also a winner not too long ago.

Since the Oct. 2102 release of their critically acclaimed debut album, the Toronto-based trio METZ have been touring very nearly non-stop, playing shows across North America and Europe. METZ, have announced that they will return to Europe in the fall for a headline tour starting in Luxembourg on November 1st and ending in Manchester, UK on Nov 22. Sub Pop sends word of a small American tour by Chad VanGallen, the Canadian weirdo that dopped a badass elpee of nice tunes, the full review can be found here.

Chad VanGaalen is a wildly talented artist, illustrator and animator from Calgary, but you probably already knew that. What you may not have known is that starting October 6th, Chad will head to the states for a week’s worth of shows touring in support of his new full-length, Diaper Island. As with all of his albums, Chad is single-handedly responsible for all of the artistic efforts that went into Diaper Island—from album art to music videos and everything in between. The new video Chad made for the song “Peace on the Rise” (click title to watch) is ample supporting evidence for the "wildly talented" claim above. 


In other VanGaalen news, because we always aim to please, we thought it was time to repress Chad’s 2005 Sub Pop debut, Infiniheart, which has been out of print for the last 5 years. Chad Van Gaalen - Diaper Island

I don’t know what Chad Van Gaalen’s trip is with shitty album titles and profoundly stupid song names (“Shave My Pussy” anyone?), but it needs to stop now. It’s creating a perception of laziness and limited songwriting craft-which is just the opposite of his abilities, as I learned once I finally got the nerve to dive in to Van Gaalen’s latest.

Diaper Island verges on the lo-fi direction of half-a-country away Woods, and countless other N.Y.C. units working with limited production values and a brainfull of big melodies. He finds himself harmonizing with his own voice, overdubbing his barely tuned guitar over Moe Tucker drums and occasional vintage electronics.

Van Gaalen slathers a big layer of echo throughout Diaper Island, which is turning into an overused strategy as of late with indie bands. Yet it works well throughout this record, giving Diaper Island a creepy and haunting vibe.

When he combines it with a nautical motif like ”Throw those bodies from the ship/Let’s feed them to the sea/’Cause no one can remember how/They got here anyway” (“Wandering Spirits”), it’s apparent that he’s spent a great deal of time making Diaper Island a consistently rewarding effort.

Now if he’d only do the same with his album title, maybe more listeners won’t be scared off by what could only be seen as a potentially juvenile release outside of the shrink-wrap.

Because Chad Van Gaalen has done more than just released a polished turd, he’s released a potentially career-defining album.

And who would want an album of that stature identified by some off-the-cuff handle that belies the ambition and hard work contained within it?
